Tech’s lab was huge. It looked more like a multi-story office turned modern fortress than any science lab Ace had ever seen. It would clearly serve as their headquarters. There was just one problem...

Whatever Tech had inside must have been worth a fortune to the police force; they had men everywhere. From where they lay hidden in some bushes across the wide street, Ace and Tech watched as men patrolled the fence-line. Many of them had dogs, and Ace could even see a mech-hound lying in front of the entrance to the building.

“Dis will be a little harder den I thought.” Ace said, watching the men and their dogs. Tech had his eyes set on the mech-hound.

“If that mech-hound is one of the newer models, I should be able to take care of it. Heck, I could even re-program the thing to work for us.” Tech said, “But we need to get in there first.”

  “Yea...”

“And then there’s my security system....” Tech sighed, “It...may or may not be online.”

“If it is, den wouldn’t it be takin’ care o’ de police?” Ace asked, looking to the coyote. Tech shook his head.

“No, not unless they tried to get inside the building. I keep the outdoor security off when I’m not inside the lab. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be able to be that close to the building.” Tech explained.

“I see...so, any thoughts on distracting dem?”

“Actually, we may not need to.”

  “What day a mean?”

“Let’s head back to the others. I’ll explain it all then.” Tech said. Ace nodded and the two slipped away quietly, careful to keep from alerting the guards.

Lexi walked through the forest quietly, guilt gnawing at her stomach. She knew she shouldn’t have made that deal, but what else could she do? Her little sister’s life was on the line. She didn’t have a choice. At least, that’s what she kept telling herself as she quietly approached the location of Tech’s lab. Lexi had taken the time to look up the location online after Marlowe had released her. Having received an address, Lexi had then headed towards the location, hitch-hiking when she could to cut down on the time spent traveling.

She stopped walking for a moment and listened closely. She could hear voices. Cautiously, she moved closer. It didn’t take her long to figure out that it was her friends she was hearing. Decided it must be okay, she approached them.

  “Hi guys.”

“LEXI!” the five friends stopped their conversation to stare at the doe in disbelief, surprise, and relief.

“Lex! You’re alright!” Ace said. Tech gave her an odd – but not unhappy – look.

“How did you escape?” the coyote asked. Lexi was a little uneasy with the question, but she knew she had to give some kind of answer.

“I-it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be....but...maybe that’s because Marlowe didn’t think I’d wake up as quickly as I did-”

“Ya were unconscious?!” Ace asked worriedly, cutting Lexi off.

“Yea, but I’m fine.” The doe replied quickly, grateful for the excuse to drop the subject, “What were you guys talking about?”

“Getting into my lab,” Tech sighed, “There’s a way to get inside from an underground ventilation shaft. The building was remodeled before I bought it, and they closed it off, but we should still be able to get inside.”

“How do we get into the shaft?” Lexi asked. Ace looked to Tech.

“Dat’s what I was just about ta ask.” The buck said.

“There’s a couple places to get in. One is inside another office building, but it’s got pretty tight security. Not really the best thing for us right now. And I’m sure that entrance has been sealed off as well. The other one that I know of can be accessed from the park, but-”

“But? Why is there always something else to make things harder?” Duck complained. Tech glared at the mallard.

“But it’s only accessible from the sewers, which are currently being worked on in that area. Either we go in during the day and risk getting caught by the people in the park, or we go at night and deal with the construction crew.”

“What if we disguised ourselves as members of de construction crew? We could head over dere in the day, and no-one would suspect anyting.” Ace suggested. Tech thought it over for a moment, but Duck spoke first.

“And where would we get uniforms?”

“They might have some at the sight.” Lexi suggested, “I’ve seen workers leave their jackets behind before.”

“I’ll-go-check-and-bring-back-any-that-I-find!” Rev said, dashing off before anyone could object. He was back in only a few seconds, holding four jackets, “They-left-these.”

“Well, looks like we have a plan.” Ace said, taking one of the jackets. Duck, Rev, and Tech put on the other three.

“Lead de way, Tech.” Ace said once the others were ready. Tech nodded, and the six approached the park, nervous but determined to take back the lab.

“So how, exactly, are we going to get rid of the police?” Duck asked. Tech was leading the group through the sewers under the city. They’d gotten inside without a problem, although navigating the maze-like structure of the tunnels would have been slightly problematic if it hadn’t been for Rev’s GPS ability. They didn’t have much of a plan yet as to how they were going to get the police to leave, however.

“If we can get inside my lab, I should be able to get to the main controls. From there, I can shut off the indoor security and start up the outdoor security. That should take care of the problem.” Tech explained, turning to look at Duck.

“Grabba lab nagh come insidee?” Slam asked.

“I can lock the doors. And if they do manage to come inside, I’m sure we can take care of them.” Tech replied. He faced forward again, “I’m mostly interested in that mech-hound. I haven’t seen one on Acmetropolis before, though I’ve heard a couple planets use them regularly in hunting and security.”

“Do ya tink de police have allies off-world?” Ace asked nervously. Tech shook his head.

“No. More likely, it’s a hunter’s hound that got trapped here. If it is, we can easily contact the hunter and get their hound back to them.”

“What if it belongs to the police?” Lexi asked nervously, “What do we do then?”

“Easy; re-program it to work with us instead of the police.” Tech said, “Then we’d have an extra bit of security.”

“Alright-I-think-the-entrance-to-the-ventilation-is-about-here.” Rev said, stopping in front of a wall. The others gathered around and looked it over.

“Eehh...ya sure about dat? It looks like a normal wall ta me.” Ace said.

“I didn’t even know about the old ventilation system until I looked at the old blueprints to my lab.” The coyote responded, “I’m sure the other entrance is here. We just need to find it...”

It took almost an hour for them to find what they were looking for. What gave it away was some off-color bricks; clearly not as old as the others around them, but close enough in coloration and wear that most would not have noticed the difference if they hadn’t been looking for one. After they had pulled out enough bricks to open the vent cover, Tech led the way inside. Ace, Lexi, Rev, Duck, and finally Slam followed. The ventilation was – thankfully – large enough for the devil to fit, even if it was a bit of a squeeze.

“What was the buildin’ before it was yer lab?” Ace asked, a little unnerved by the size of the ventilation shaft. Tech shrugged.

“I don’t know. At some point, it was an office, but that was years ago. It had been abandoned for a while before it was renovated and I bought it.” The coyote responded, “Whatever it was, it needed a lot of air circulation.”

The rest of the journey to the lab was quiet. When they reached the other end, Tech carefully removed the cover.

“Stay here. I’ll come back as soon as I get everything settled.” Tech said before slipping out of the shaft and hurrying across the room. The coyote could clearly recall where every one of his traps was set, though some of the security was motion-triggered and was still set off. Ten minutes later, Tech had reached the control room. He hurried over to the main computer and quickly types in a set of codes, shutting off the inner security, before inputting another set of codes to turn on the outdoor security. He then grabbed what appeared to be a gun from the desk as he turned and hurried back to the ventilation shaft to get the others.

“It’s off!” the coyote called once he was back inside the room. No sooner had the words come out of his mouth, than the main door slid open to reveal a snarling mech-hound and a startled police officer. As soon as the man saw the six anthros, he freaked out completely.

“THEY’RE HERE!! THE LOONATICS ARE HERE!!” He screamed, turning away from the door and running away, leaving just the mech-hound.

Tech didn’t waste any time. Aiming quickly, he shot a white laser at the mechanical canine as it lunged towards the anthros. The hound yelped before collapsing on the ground, effectively neutralized. Tech lowered the weapon, smirking slightly.

“I didn’t know ya were handy wit’ guns, Tech.” Ace commented, impressed. Tech walked over to the canine and knelt next to it.

“You grow up where I did, and you’ll pick up a few...tricks.” He commented absent-mindedly, looking over the downed mech-hound, “Well it looks like our friend here wasn’t damaged. I’ll just shut him off before the neutralizer wears off, and then I’ll find out where he came from.”

“So-what-do-we-do-now? We-got-the-lab-back-and-the-police-aren’t-in-front-anymore.” Rev asked quickly. Tech stood, the now shut-down mech-hound in his arms.

“Oh, they’ll be back. You can count on it.” the coyote said dryly. He started back down the hallway he had come from, “Let me drop this guy off in my main lab, and I’ll show you around.”

Ace was shocked at just how big Tech’s lab was. It looked large enough from the outside, but extended an additional floor underground, though Tech wasn’t currently using the basement. Ace immediately thought it would make an excellent training room, though to him, the first priority was to organize who would sleep where. As Tech already had a bedroom set up, it was quickly decided that the floor his room was on would be the one they all slept on. Most of the rooms were empty, though a couple had boxes of machine parts in them. With Slam’s help, Tech quickly cleared out five of the rooms for the others. The coyote even offered to sound-proof Lexi’s room to account for her increased hearing.

Slam found interest in the huge kitchen; something that Tech had rarely used, but that would probably get a lot more use now that there were six people living under the same roof. After giving them a brief tour and leaving them to set up their rooms, Tech went back into the sewers to hide the underground entrance. It took him a good thirty minutes to re-construct the wall with Rev’s help and return the borrowed construction jackets, but he soon returned to the new Headquarters.

As Rev ran off to get his room set up, Ace followed Tech to the lab where he had placed the mech-hound.

“Gonna find out where dat came from?” The buck asked as Tech turned the lights in the room on.

“It might take a while, but yes.” The coyote stated, booting up a computer, “I should be able to figure out who it belongs to imply by running it’s calling-card information through my computer and searching through the facial recognition database. That should let us know who his call-master and sponsors are.”

“Right. You do dat...” Ace said, not exactly sure what the coyote meant. Tech glanced at Ace.

“It’ll tell us who he belongs to and who created him.”

“Oh okay, dat makes sense. How long will dat take?”

“About four hours, give or take.” Tech said, turning back to the mech-hound. Ace sighed and watched the coyote work. With nothing else to do, he figured watching the process would be better than wondering around the large building and risk getting lost.
